What is respite care?

Respite care is short-term, planned care for a child with a disability so the family can rest and recharge. In Minnesota it can be funded through waivers (CADI, DD), CDCS, county family support grants, or paid privately. Providers range from agencies to licensed respite homes.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Is respite provided in our home or at your location?
  • How are your respite staff screened and trained?
  • Which funding sources do you accept?
  • How far ahead do we need to schedule?

Respite Care in Minnesota: FAQ

How do I pay for respite care in Minnesota?

Respite in Minnesota is commonly funded through disability waivers (CADI, DD), CDCS budgets, county family-support or respite programs, the Family Support Grant, or private pay. Start with your county to see what your child qualifies for.

What is the difference between in-home and out-of-home respite?

In-home respite brings a trained caregiver to your house so your child stays in familiar surroundings. Out-of-home respite happens at a licensed home, center or camp. Many families use both, depending on the length of the break and their child's needs.

Can I get respite without a waiver?

Sometimes. Some Minnesota counties fund short-term respite through family support programs, and the Family Support Grant can help pay for it. Private-pay respite is also available. Ask your county what's available for children who aren't on a waiver.
